When to visit Udawalawe National Park

The reservoir gathers elephants through the dry months. The park is open all year, and the jeep is worth booking either side of the rains.

Udawalawe is a dry-zone park built around a reservoir. That water is why the safaris work. When the grasslands brown off, roughly from February through September, elephant herds spend more of the day in the open, moving between the tank and the shade. Mornings are the classic drive: cool air, long sightlines, and animals that have not yet settled into the tree line.

The north-east rains, often November into January, turn the park green. Tracks can be slower after a night of rain, and afternoon showers are common. Wildlife does not leave. You simply trade dust for taller grass and a softer light. If your dates are fixed, book the jeep anyway and ask us which gate time suits that week.

The park is a day-visit by jeep. There is no walking safari. Arrive with the ticket time we agree, bring a layer for the dawn drive, and expect the balance of the quote to be paid when we meet you.
